Insights from Issa Rae’s ‘Insecure’
What I’ve gleaned five seasons later
The Importance of Healthy Love Stories
In a world where romantic fantasy overwhelms, Insecure underlines the truth of accepting the process of love rather than romanticizing an idyllic, idolized ending.
From the series we learn that healthy love stories do look like breakups. They look like changed plans and minds. They can take shape as pauses, endings, rekindlings, and newfound beginnings.
The series finale displays each character freed of how things were supposed to go romantically and accepting how they are. A lesson that goes beyond the trite it is what it is but takes steps further to going after what you want and accepting each moving piece of reality that comes with it.
Growth is Non-Linear
From season one to the series finale, Issa Dee realizes that her relationships, friendships, wants and of course, her insecurities, are ever-shifting tiles beneath her. Eventually, she develops proactive instead of reactive responses to walking on these tiles towards her desired ending.
